The Urgent Need for Electoral System Reform in Nigeria

INTRODUCTION

Free, fair, and credible elections are the foundation of democracy. However, Nigeria’s electoral processes have been plagued by controversies, logistical failures, and allegations of manipulation over the years.

Addressing Technological and Logistical Challenges

While the introduction of technology has helped improve aspects of the electoral process, challenges with transmission of results, card readers, and logistics still undermine credibility. These areas require urgent improvement.

Strengthening the Independence of INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission needs greater financial and administrative independence to reduce political interference and improve its ability to conduct credible elections.

Reforming Electoral Laws and Processes

There is a need to review and update electoral laws to close existing gaps. This includes clearer guidelines on result collation, dispute resolution, and the conduct of political parties and candidates.
