Local governments are meant to bring governance closer to the people. However, in Nigeria, local governments are often weak, underfunded, and heavily controlled by state governments, limiting their effectiveness.

One of the biggest challenges is lack of financial autonomy. Allowing local governments to receive and manage their allocations directly will enable them to plan and execute development projects more effectively.
Building Capacity of Local Government Officials
Many local government officials lack the skills and capacity needed for effective administration. Training and capacity-building programs are necessary to improve performance at this level.
Increasing Citizen Participation
Governance at the local level improves when citizens are actively involved. Creating platforms for community participation in decision-making and project monitoring will increase accountability and responsiveness.
